Beer Style Guidelines
From the brewhouse come centuries of mystery, folklore, tradition and the fine art of brewing, interpreted by each brewer. From modern brewing chemists come statistical and scientific data. Add to this spiritual alchemy the demands from commercial sales departments calling for a market-oriented product and the free spirit of the homebrewer. The vagaries of beer styles become apparent.
American brewers are in the middle of one of the most stylistically prolific periods ever. After a generation of simplicity in beer types, there is an outpouring of styles not seen in this country for decades. There are many reasons for American brewers to develop beer style guidelines, benchmarks, and a common language for measuring beer and communicating about brewing endeavors.
Some brewers and beer enthusiasts believe that styles are defined a bit more than necessary. But when staging a competition, standards must be established in order to define what the awards represent. Beer style guidelines serve as guideposts or targets to help us direct our brewing efforts and achieve the kind of beer we want.
Guidelines are just that: guidelines. They are a tool. They are not some kind of law or regulation. Their purpose is to help enhance the understanding and quality of our products. The art of establishing, changing and using guidelines is a game we all play. In the end it is our participation as spectators that makes it all worth the playful and meaningful consideration. Glasses full of brew and enjoyment.
Developing beer style guidelines is not a simple endeavor.
